How To Treat Fleas?

Flea control should never rely solely on chemicals since effective flea control depends on using an integrated, range of control techniques and products such as:

  • Conducting a thorough inspection to locate and identify flea sources both inside and outside the home.
  • Using insect growth regulators that interfere with the normal development of fleas from egg to adult stage.
  • Using vacuums to physically remove all flea stages from carpets, flooring, furniture and in pet bedding areas.
  • Using carpet cleaning equipment and frequently washing and drying pet bedding to kill fleas.

Owners are often frustrated with their efforts to treat a flea infestation. The pupal or cocoon stage of the life cycle (refer below) is resistant to all insecticides leading to failure in regulating the population of fleas.

The common failure scenario is that the owner treats for fleas, then in a couple of weeks, the fleas return because the new adults are emerging from the insecticide-resistant cocoon.

Flea infestations require integrated treatment plans. Addressing only a pet’s infestation or individual flea bites will not prove effective for ridding your home of fleas. Effective flea control should include both chemical and physical methods and should be conducted on your pets as well as inside and outside of your home.

The Lifecycle of a Flea

flea life cycle5% of fleas live in the environment as an adult, 95 % of fleas live as eggs, larvae or pupae. For effective flea control, it is essential to break the lifecycle in the environment.

  • Adult Fleas – jump onto you or your pets, feed on blood and then start laying eggs.
  • Eggs – one female lays up to 50 eggs per day, they drop off in carpets, flooring, furniture and bedding before hatching.
  • Larvae – the hatched eggs release larvae which move away from light, deeper into carpets and under furniture before developing into pupae. The larvae feed on organic debris and at this stage can consume tapeworm eggs, allowing them to become an intermediate host for the development of tapeworms.

This life cycle can take as little as 2-3 weeks but can last up to 6 months. To rid your household from fleas, you must break this cycle.

For every six fleas you see, there are 300 in the immediate environment around your home. A flea-infested pet is like a living salt shaker of flea eggs!

    Flea Treatment FAQ’s

We gathered the most common question about fleas that people ask our Melbourne pest control team.

Why do I still have fleas after using a flea bomb?
While flea bombs sound like an effective solution for indoor flea infestations, their chemicals often do not reach hidden or sheltered areas, such as the spaces beneath furniture or the interiors of closets and cabinets. These spaces can become a refuge for the fleas. Fleas in these protected areas will be unaffected by the flea bomb and therefore not controlled. Flea bombs also do not address outdoor infestation or animal infestation.

Flea bombs are not a safe and effective method for household flea removal. They release a chemical that settles down on everything that is exposed within the area they are used. This includes clothing, children’s toys, exposed foods, utensils and food prep areas.

What if my pets have fleas?
One of the most critical parts of successful flea control is addressing the source of the fleas. Pets should be treated with an appropriately labelled product that you can purchase from your veterinarian or good pet supply store. If your pet is the source and not treated, it will lead to a continuation of flea activity and failure other treatments. The areas outside where the animals rest also need to be treated.
How do you get rid of fleas?
Flea control should never rely solely on chemicals since effective flea control depends on using an integrated range of control techniques. We work with you to remove fleas from your home with the following process:

    • Conducting a thorough inspection to locate and identify flea sources both inside and outside the home.
    • Using insect growth regulators that interfere with the normal development of fleas from egg to adult stage.
    • Using vacuums to physically remove all flea stages from carpets, flooring, furniture and in pet bedding areas.
    • Using carpet cleaning equipment and frequently washing and drying pet bedding to kill fleas.
    • Treating your pets with approved products through consultation with your vet.

Effective flea control should include both chemical and physical methods and should be conducted on your pet as well as inside and outside of your home.

Is your treatment safe for my family and pets?
Pesticides can be dangerous when applied incorrectly and not in accordance with the product label directions. There are exclusion period requirements for people and pets to remain away from treated areas until liquid products have completely dried. By engaging us you are assured that a licenced pest control technician will carry out a treatment that is safe for your family and pests.
